After 12 years of soul refining fires, the Meyers family left everything, trusted God and followed a dream—sailing on a hospital ship bringing hope and healing to the world’s forgotten poor. While training at Mercy Ships International Center, a health crisis left them in shock and the dream sank before launching. Trust in God returned as they faced dangers of the sea, lessons in mercy and a quiet miracle. Hope and healing for the poor became their own reflections in the sea.

Marilyn Meyers is the Ontario Alumni/Speaker Coordinator for Mercy Ships Canada, passionately advocating for the world’s forgotten poor. Dedicated to diverse Christian service, she has worked in youth
counselling and camping ministry, and served administratively for
people with physical and mental challenges. For four years, she and her family lived, worked and sailed on a Mercy Ship, docking mainly in West African ports. Marilyn and Bruce, along with their three teenage children, live near Burlington, Ontario.

Most often choices center around our own interests, but in this gripping story, Marilyn Meyers shows us there is another way. It is risky, financially unrewarding, a life lived on one precipice after another. The reward? Pushing back the
boundaries of comfort, seeing the hand of God in all you do and learning that life is more than what you get. As you read Through Fire & Sea, be prepared to risk living through the fire and water of your own calling.

Everyone has their own “fire stories”, yet from the first page of Through Fire & Sea, Marilyn Meyers invites you into her family’s perilous journey. Her captivating writing style drew me into their lives so completely that I could almost feel the spray of salt water. While saying “yes” to God is always a great adventure, this story clearly illustrates the adventure of proving the greatness of our God. Anchors aweigh!

The world of Christian books is full of theories and theologies that stretch our minds and warm our hearts. But we all need the challenge and encouragement that only a practical example can bring. The story of Marilyn and her family puts skin on what for too many Christians are just ethereal concepts.
