The Story of the Salvation Army in Woodstock
In January 1884, Captain Annie O’Leary was appointed to take charge of The Salvation Army ministry in Woodstock, Ontario, a quiet aristocratic town situated on the Thames River. To Be Continued tells the stories of ordinary people through those 125 years. Based on archival material and personal interviews, the author has captured something of the early days of this evangelical denomination. This book has been written to both entertain and challenge by the stories of God’s grace, demonstrated in the lives of common people dedicated to God and service to humanity. The Salvation Army, founded in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth, made its way to Canada in the great waves of immigrants who came from Great Britain. This book gives an overview of the early founding of this organization and its life in Canada. The Woodstock corps was the 17th centre of ministry for the Army in Canada.
Elaine Becker was born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario. On April 11, 1949, she was the second of twin girls born to Edward and Thora Becker. She and her twin sister, Evelyn, attended Victoria School, Central School and Woodstock Collegiate Institute before Elaine moved to Toronto in 1969 to train as a Salvation Army officer in the Victorious session, commissioned in 1971, with the rank of lieutenant.
Elaine has pursued an academic education alongside of her ministry, having studied at Ontario Bible College, Ontario Theological Seminary and Trinity International University, where she was granted a PhD. She currently is the director of the degree completion program at Tyndale University College, Toronto.
Elaine enjoys retirement from The Salvation Army after 34 years of active service. She is actively engaged in leading a Bible study and other ministries in Woodstock, Ontario.
