Compassion Series: Book 1

The Cardboard Shack Beneath The Bridge

An award-winning bestseller and first book in the StreetLevel’s children’s Compassion Series. The Cardboard Shack Beneath the Bridge offers the impetus for a dynamic and interactive elementary school program, encouraging children to look at their world through the lens of compassion and understanding, rather than assumption, judgment or fear. Tim believes that when we nurture compassion in a child in one area of life, the potential is great that it will spill over into all other areas. Tim Huff addresses the complex issues of homelessness in this book and disabilities in his next. Tim combines tender and honest prose with bright and bold illustrations, which are complemented by the insights and wisdom of his professional peers, educators, and moms and dads.

Tim Huff was born and raised in Toronto where he has stitched together a radical life of service among children, youth, and adults who face profound physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual challenges. His journey of full-time service, learning and advocacy for poor, oppressed, misunderstood and marginalized people has taken him across Canada, the United States and around the world. He is both an avid learner and highly sought after speaker and teacher in his field. He continues to works tirelessly on creative, pro-active community building and compassionate responses to domestic poverty, homelessness and marginalization.

Tim’s children’s books and this new Compassion Series, unite a unique combination of his skills and interests that go back to his formal studies in classic animation and developmental services. He has a giftedness in writing evident in his second impactful children’s book It’s Hard Not to Stare: Helping Children Understand Disabilities, along with his award-winning and bestselling Castle Quay Books publications for adults—Bent Hope: A Street Journal, and Dancing with Dynamite: Celebrating Against the Odds. Several more Castle Quay Books projects are planned.

Tim is married to Diane and is the father of two beloved children—Sarah Jane and Jake.

The Toronto Star featured the material enthusiastically as a “labour of love.” Woman Alive magazine touted the book as a “must for encouraging compassion in our children.” The Ladybug Foundation cheered, “Tim’s book needs to be in the hands of every child.” The Word Guild celebrated it as “striking” and “grand” and “a book for all ages.”
