Itís Hard Not To Stare: Helping Children Understand Disabilities
Compassion Series: Book 2

Itís Hard Not to Stare
is the second book unpacking StreetLevelís childrenís Compassion Series. The material encourages children to look at their world through the lens of compassion and understanding, rather than assumption, judgment or fear. Tim believes this approach will impact the way we care for and befriend people in our communities and beyond, and that when we nurture compassion in a child in one area of life, the potential is great that this goodness will spill over into all other areas. Tim Huff addresses issues related to disabilities in this book, as he did homelessness in the first of the series, applying the same tender and truthful prose, along with bright and courageous child-friendly illustrations, which have been heightened by the insights and wisdom of his professional peers, educators and moms and dads.

Tim Huff was born and raised in Toronto, where he has stitched together a radical life of service among children, youth and adults who face profound physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual challenges. His journey of service, learning and advocacy for the poor, oppressed, misunderstood and marginalized people has taken him across Canada, the United States and around the world. He is both an avid learner and a highly sought after speaker and teacher in his field. He continues to work tirelessly on creative community building and compassionate responses to domestic poverty, homelessness and marginalization.

Timís childrenís books and this new Compassion Series unite his skills and interests that go back to his formal studies in classic animation and developmental services. He has a giftedness in writing evident in this second impactful childrenís book, Itís Hard Not to Stare: Helping Children Understand Disabilities, along with his award-winning and best-selling Castle Quay Books publications for both children and adults: The Cardboard Shack Beneath the BridgeóHelping Children Understand Homelessness, Bent HopeóA Street Journal, Dancing with DynamiteóCelebrating Against the Odds. Several more Castle Quay Books projects are planned.

Tim also has a remarkable history of direct service and leadership experience in his field, including staff director at the Ontario (Bob Rumball) Camp of the Deaf, founding director of Frontlines Youth Centre, founding director of Youth Unlimited (YFC)ís Light Patrol street outreach and Operation Good Thing, member of the boards of directors for Hockey Helps the Homeless and The Daily Bread Food Bank, and chairperson for several national social-justice conferences and campaigns. Tim is also the co-founder of The Hope Exchange StreetLevel Network (StreetLevel), currently serving as the director of community engagement.

Tim is married to Diane and is the father of two beloved childrenóSarah Jane and Jake.
